I am currently working on the creation of colonial spaces in early twentieth century Puerto Rico. Combining critical geography and theories of governmentality, I am examining different kinds of spaces, including disciplinary (the public schools), sovereign (the Army regiment and the Insular Police), and governmental (population and political economy) institutions and practices. I hope to eventually compare the specific colonial spaces in Puerto Rico with those of other U.S. possessions, especially the Philippines.
In addition, I am theorizing the epistemology and ontology of archipelagic thinking as found in the work of Édouard Glissant. The analysis centers around the concept of Relation as expounded in Poétique de la Relation and Philosophie de la Relation.
